ROSCOE MILLER
Roscoe Miller, 84, husband of Joan Friend Miller, died at his home on Monday, May 2, 2005.
He was born August 25, 1920 in Lee County to the late Samuel and Martha Shoemaker Miller. He was a retired U.S. Forest Service employee, a World War II veteran, and a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Beattyville. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Logan, Ellis and Charley Miller; and two sisters, Annie King and Della Cook.
Survivors are his wife, Joan Miller of Stanton, KY; three daughters, Irene Caudill and Paul Brandenburg of Beattyville, KY, Linda Lou and Jim Porter of Rogers, KY, and Carolyn Sue and Steve Ledford of Slade, KY; two brothers, Walter Miller of Memphis, TN, and Henry Miller of Greensburg, IN; one sister, Thelma Ratliff of Zoe, KY; a very special sister-in-law, Geneva Halsey; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Roscoe Miller were held Thursday, May 5, 2005 in the Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Short officiating.
Pallbearers were Billy, David, Josh, Cody and Michael Caudill, Rob Moore, John Porter and Daniel Porter. Honorary pallbearers were Marvin and Karen Halsey, Chris and Shawna Halsey, Farell and Kathleen Ratliff, J.T. Smith, Don Fig, Wallace Booth, Kendel Culberson, Ricky and Bonnie Smith, Raymond and Violet Martin, Carl Sr. and Virginia Wells, Carl Wells Jr., Rosie Drake, Damon and Tracy Halsey, Valerie Halsey, Travis and Meghan Halsey, Jr., and Walter Miller and members of Faith United Methodist Church of Beattyville.
ALLEN L. SMYTH
Allen L. Smyth, 71 of Pontiac Michigan, passed away on March 18th, 2005. He was survived by six children; Allen Charles Smyth (Chip), William M. Smyth (Bill), Randy Scott Smyth, Catherine L. Testner — all of Pontiac, Michigan, Sherry N. Shipley, David A. Rock — both of Lake Orion, Michigan, 17 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, two sisters; Mildred (Raymond) Sparks, Pontiac, Michigan, Millie Verne (Willis) Caldwell, Leeco, Kentucky, three brothers; Charles Paul (Corrine) Smyth, Albert Ray (Kathy) Smyth — of Dayton, Ohio, Lloyd (Janice) Smyth Jr., Leeco, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Catherine Smyth, and three brothers, William, Wallace, and Harvey Smyth.
A memorial service will be held at the Smyth Cemetery on May 28th at 1:00 p.m. by the Rev. James Harold Combs. Everyone invited.
DOROTHY LOU
HARRIS
Dorothy Lou Harris, 63, of Beattyville, KY, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Wolfe County Health Care Center in Campton, KY.
She was born May 9, 1942, the daughter of Carl and Mable Cecil Harris. She was a homemaker and member of the Catholic Church.
Survivors are her husband, James H. Harris of Beattyville, KY; one daughter, Sherri Alexander (and husband, Roby Hensley) of Hamilton, OH; one stepson, James Anthony Harris (Debbie) of Chicago, IL; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services for Dorothy Lou Harris will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Queen of All Saints Catholic Church with Father Michael Weglicki officiating. Burial will be in the Smith Cemetery on Big Andy Ridge with Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
OSCAR TIREY
Oscar Tirey, 103, of Booneville, KY, widower of Frances Moore, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2005 at the Owsley County Health Care Center in Booneville, KY.
He was born in Owsley County, KY on April 5, 1902, the son of Eli and Ellen Bond Tirey. He was a general laborer and member of the Levi Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are daughters, Agnes Tincher (Will) of Beattyville, KY, Catherine Turner (Lutrell) of Dayton, OH; son, Belvie Tirey (Jean) of Beaver Creek, OH; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by two grandsons.
Funeral services for Oscar Tirey were held Sunday, May 15, 2005 at 1 p.m. in the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Garett Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Tincher Cemetery on Hwy 587 with Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
JEFFERY WAYNE BEGLEY
Jeffery Wayne Begley, 32, of Beattyville, KY, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at the KY River Medical Center in Jackson, KY.
He was born February 23, 1973, the son of Thomas Wayne and Sylvia Jean Peters Begley. He attended the Beattyville Baptist Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Alyson Spencer of Beattyville, KY; mother, Sylvia Jean Begley of Beattyville, KY; his late father, Thomas Begley; sisters, Paula Turner of Patriot, IN, Angie Peters of Beattyville, KY; nephews, Justin, Josh, Jordan and Korey; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents, Isie and Hugh Peters, and Clayton and Beulah Begley.
Funeral services for Jeff Begley were held Saturday, May 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Garett Thomas and Pastor Mark Coburn officiating. Burial was in the Peters Cemetery on Long Branch Road with Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Justin Spencer, Josh England, Scotty Peters, Dave England, Jason Gay, Eddie Duke, Denver Peters and Jeremy Peters.
FLORINE CAMPBELL
Florine Whitaker Campbell, 89, wife of the late William R. Campbell, passed away May 12, 2005 in Sarasota, FL.
She was born November 23, 1915 in Letcher County,KY to Sara Combs Whitaker and John P. Whitaker and came to Sarasota from Beattyville, Lee County, KY, in 1954.
She retired from Sarasota Public Schools in 1974 after a career of teaching for 40 years, 20 years in Kentucky and 20 years in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.
She is survived by one brother, Richard Whitaker of Indiana; three nieces; five nephews; 4 step-nieces and several grand nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the Winchester Cemetery in Winchester, KY.
